Phone Conversation was placed on Tuesday September 21, 2010 12:25-12:43pm with Jane Black, noted Fashion Stylist in Los Angeles, California.
Amanda: When did you decide that styling was your niche?
Jane: "After working for E! Entertainment, as a Fashion Producer I met a lot of celebrities and built client tell. Which led to six years of freelance style. After six years passed I had established myself to where I am now."
Amanda: What internships or former jobs did you endure that related to your current career?
Jane: "Starting a Fashion Modeling career at 16yrs old, seeing the world, and witnessing fashion evolve, it helped me most than ever. "
Amanda: How did you promote your brand, when you first started?
Jane: "I didn’t, it just kind of happened. With the help of E! Entertainment and my established client tell, I made a website for the brand to promote itself."
Amanda: Did you reach out to other stylist and photographers for help?
Jane: "Yes, I emailed them on set, off set, and whenever I can squeeze in time. This business is all about networking and how you present yourself; so during a shoot you can meet up to ten people. With those ten people introduce, yourself to each one: the other stylist, the make-up artist, the photo director, etc. Meet them all and get their cards. Follow up with them for future jobs. "
Amanda: What books did you read in regards to starting your career?
Jane: "History of Costume (text), several Fashion Magazines, and News articles focusing on styling."
Amanda: If faced with any challenges, how did you cope? And what inspired you to keep going?
Jane: "2008, was absolutely the hardest year for me. The economic hit everyone hard, and ruin a lot of careers. On a better note, that was the same year I had a baby, and it gave me ample time to take off, and come back stronger for the next year. Luckily my business has steadily picked back up; unfortunately for some of my friends they got second jobs."
Amanda: What motivates your style and spirit every day?
Jane: "Fashion has always been that thing in life that expresses my emotions, style, and being. Like I mentioned, fashion is always changing and evolving. With shows every six months, shopping for clients, and keeping watch on up and coming designer; my mind was never go black, and I will never have a void. My love for fashion will do nothing but grow."
Amanda: What is your next step?
Jane: "To have bigger and better clients, and to make MORE money."
Amanda: Do you see your brand expanding?
Jane: "A few years down the line. Maybe having a larger studio. I will have to wait and see what else is new."
Amanda: Where do you see yourself in five years?
Jane: "Ummmm....Working with corporate clients having an assistant. And as crazy as it sounds, being busier.
Side note from Jane Black:
"Amanda if you are or will have to take accounting, I highly advise you pay close attention in the class. By going into business yourself, you have to file your own taxes and it could be a hassle. On another note, have a serious plan after graduation. Know top PR companies, publicists, and intern for free if you have the opportunity. Those who have free internships are sometimes taken more seriously. This job is morning, noon, and night so you will ever love it or hate it. Also by assisting an up and coming stylist, you will learn what kind of stylist you want to become. Nice talking to you, contact me in the spring."
